Nigerians, in response to the xenophobic attacks on fellow Nigerians in South Africa, damaged MTN offices and Shoprite branches, both owned by South African companies. MTN shut down its activities in Nigeria, due to the damage caused by angry Nigerians in their offices.
MTN offices in Uyo Akwa Ibom, Surulere, Ikorodu and other areas in Lagos were taken over by violent protesters and employees were forced out of the buildings. The MTN office at Ibadan, Oyo was set ablaze!
Shoprite at Jakande, was the worst hit, as somebody was reportedly shot dead by the police in a bid to stop the violence by the protesters. Surulere, Ikeja and Maryland malls were shutdown as the areas were barricaded by the police to avoid violence.
