Kano State Government relies on “verbal autopsy” to determine cause of over 600 recent deaths in the state.

The Kano State Government has said it will rely on “verbal” methods to determine the cause of over 600 deaths in the past week, in the State.

The Coordinator, Technical Response Team on COVID-19, Dr Tijani Hussaini, said, “Kano being a predominantly muslim state, buries its dead almost immediately which makes it nearly impossible to determine the cause of death of an individual.

In medical practice, there is what we call “verbal autopsy. What we are doing is going back in history to see if we can make connections. What we are doing is verbal autopsy to make sure we get to the root of this seemingly increasing death rate in Kano. Investigations will inform decision making and Kano State Government will take it seriously.”

We sincerely hope this exercise brings comprehensive answers to the question of mysterious deaths in Kano State in the last week.
