Acting Inspector General of Police Usman Baba revealed that SWAT isn’t fully operational

The Acting Inspector General Of Police, Usman Baba on Thursday, 27th of May, 2021 disclosed that the replacement unit for disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad called the Special Weapon Tactical Team has not become fully operational. AIGP Usman Baba revealed this during the State House briefing in Abuja.
SARS was disbanded in 2020 after Nigerians protested the extreme excesses of the unit.
The former police chief, Mohammed Adamu after disbanding the unit proposed SWAT to replace it, a move which Nigerians openly criticized.
Revealing the situational report on the SWAT unit, the current police chief, Baba said that the lack of replacement has left Nigerians prone to violent crimes.
According to the Presidency Twitter handle, “Acting IGP says since the proscription of SARS, the planned replacement (SWAT) has not been able to fully take over, leaving a gap in the tackling of violent crimes from a position of strength. One of the priorities now is filling that gap.”
